So, why do they call it Omaha? Prior to 1982, there existed a few other Poker variants which changed and grew with the passage of time.

These variants used 5-hole cards as opposed to the modern-day rule that uses 4-hole cards. Oklahoma, Nine Cards, etc. were some of the names that were tried while naming the game.

Omaha, basically, was a compromise since the region is situated somewhere near the centre of the United States. It is an interesting variant and people are literally engaging in this to make money online.

Omaha Poker Rules

The basic Omaha rules are easy to understand. It is important that you do not interchange it with Texas Hold'em owing to the latter’s much popular reputation.

In Omaha Poker, players at the table are dealt 4 cards each, which are also called hole cards. You need to me wary to use only two of these cards to make your 5-card hand using the community cards.

As the game progresses, community cards are unveiled. These cards are accessible to all players for use and formation of their 5-card combination.

If you are well-versed in Texas Hold'em, switching to Omaha can feel complicated at first. The Omaha rule suggests that you need to use any 2 cards out of 4 dealt to you to form your best hand.

In Hold'em, if the community cards have revealed themselves as hearts cards, and you hold an Ace of hearts and a King of diamonds, you have a Flush, whereas in Omaha you are left holding nothing but an ace-high hand.

How to Play Omaha Poker?

Once you understand the basic rules, next comes the gameplay and you may wonder how to play Omaha Poker.

The game uses a standard 52-card deck. While playing offline, you can include as many players as possible from two to ten, whereas most online portals will seat six players at a given time.

Like Texas Hold'em, Omaha Poker requires its players to post blinds. Before the dealer deals the cards, the player sitting to the left of the dealer posts the small blind and then the next player posts the big blind.

These blinds are mandatory bets placed to get the game started.

Once the players post their blinds, the dealer deals with 4 cards each between all the players. These cards are also called hole cards and are only for the player’s eyes and must not be revealed to anyone or discussed.

Each betting round has its own terminology – pre-flop, the flop, the turn, the river, and the showdown.

• Pre-flop: Once the small and big blinds place their bets, the players are allowed to see their cards after which the pre-flop ensues. Having assessed their 4 cards, the players now have the option to call, raise, or fold.
