Hat-tricks are quite rare in the game of cricket, and it is a feat that is rarely achieved by bowlers.
When you think of hat-tricks in IPL, bowlers such as Shami, Malinga etc spring to our minds. Especially in a tourney like the Indian Premier League, each ball and run counts.
A run here or a wicket in middle overs; the pendulum could swing either way.
But if a bowler scalps a hat-trick and that too in a IPL game, it counts for something extraordinary.
From that point onwards, the opposition really finds themselves in muddy waters such is the feat.
Hat-tricks are not that easy especially when it comes to T20 cricket as it is mostly called a ‘batsman’s game’.
But here we are, discussing and listing out the bowlers who have scalped hat-tricks for their respective sides in the previous seasons of IPL.
But do you know the names who have achieved this feat in the Indian Premier League?
Here are the Hat-tricks in IPL
There have been 20 hat-tricks in the history of the tournament so far and the first ever bowler to do so was L. Balaji for the Chennai outfit.
The medium pacer was playing for the MS Dhoni’s squad in 2008 and recorded himself in the record books when his Chennai side played Punjab Kings (back then called as Kings XI Punjab).
He scalped the wickets of Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla and VRV Singh all in one go to claim IPL’s first ever hat-trick.
Apart from him, the likes of Makhaya Ntini and Amit Mishra too have honourable mentions in the hat-trick books of IPL in the inaugural season.
Here’s the list of bowlers who have scalped hat tricks in IPL:
1. Lakshmipathy Balaji (Chennai Super Kings – 2008)
The medium-pacer scripted history when he became the first ever bowler to scalp a hat-trick in the Indian Premier League history back in 2008.
He achieved this feat against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings).
Balaji was a well-known bowler back then and came into bowl when the opposition required 25 runs.
However, he brought victory to CSK as he sent back Irfan Pathan, VRV Singh and Piyush Chawla in a heap.
2. Amit Mishra (Delhi Daredevils – 2008)
A veteran in the Indian cricket fraternity, Amit Mishra too has etched his name in the history books of the IPL when he registered in the inaugural season for the Delhi outfit.
However, that didn’t stop there as Mishra claimed two more, and made him one of the successful bowlers in the T20 League by claiming the most number of hat-tricks
He also holds the record of most wickets by a spinner in IPL history.
3. Makhaya Ntini (Chennai Super Kings – 2008)
The Proteas pacer too inked his name in the record books by becoming the first overseas star to scalp a hat-trick in the IPL.
Ntini achieved this feat against the Kolkata side by taking the wickets of Sourav Ganguly, Debrata Das and David Hussey.
4. Yuvraj Singh (Kings XI Punjab – 2009)
Indian superstar Yuvraj Singh too has a hat-trick to his name back in 2009. The most notable was that against Bangalore as it was his maiden hat-trick in the IPL.
5. Rohit Sharma (Deccan Chargers – 2009)
The current Indian skipper might be famous for his batting heroics, but do you know he has a hat-trick to his name?
Who knew that Rohit Sharma hat trick in IPL would make the news?
Well, the Hitman did the unthinkable when he scalped a hat-trick against his current IPL employers, Mumbai Indians way back in 2009. That was some feat!
6. Praveen Kumar (Royal Challengers Bangalore – 2010)
Indian pacer Praveen Kumar remains the only bowler to pick up a hat-trick in the 3rd IPL edition (2010).
Kumar achieved this feat against the Kolkata team as Kumar’s heroics made a huge impact.
7. Pravin Tambe (Rajasthan Royals – 2014)
The veteran leggie who burst onto the scene of the IPL, too has a hat-trick to his name when he recorded it against the KKR in the 2014 edition.
What’s more, the hat-trick made sure that Rajasthan ended up on the winning side.
8. Shane Watson (Rajasthan Royals – 2014)
Aussie all-rounder Shane ‘Watto’ Watson who moved teams from Rajasthan to Chennai, was the hero for the former when he claimed his first hat-trick in his early days for the Pink team.
9. Axar Patel (Kings XI Punjab – 2016)
All-rounder Axar Patel hat-trick against Gujarat Lions was a memorable one as it gave his side the win back in 2016.
The left-armer scalped the wickets of Dinesh Karthik, Dwayne Bravo, and Ravindra Jadeja in his match-winning spell.
10. Samuel Badree (Royal Challengers Bangalore – 2017)
The West Indian Samuel Badree was the first to pick the hat-trick in the 2017 edition of the IPL for his side, RCB.
He dismissed Parthiv Patel, Mitchell McClenaghan and Rohit Sharma. Despite the heroics, RCB couldn’t muster up the win against Mumbai but then skipper Virat Kohli was left impressed.
11. Andrew Tye (Gujarat Lions – 2017)
Aussie bowler Andrew Tye claimed his first ever hat-trick in IPL as he finished with a match-winning performance of 5/17.
The three wickets of the hat trick included the likes of Ankit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, and Shardul Thakur.

12. Jaydev Unadkat (Rising Pune Supergiants- 2017)
The left-arm pacer who burst on to the domestic scene in Indian cricket with aplomb, Jayadev Unadkat, made sure he etched his name in the books of IPL as well.
Unadkat who played for Pune’s side in 2017, recorded a win for his side as they rolled over Hyderabad in the league game.
13. Sam Curran (Kings XI Punjab – 2019)
Englishman Sam Curran recorded himself on the history books by bagging his first ever hat-trick in the IPL against the Delhi outfit back in 2019.
He did so in the penultimate over as his Punjab side won on the day.
14. Shreyas Gopal (Rajasthan Royals – 2019)
Imagine having a hat-trick and then including the likes of AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli in that?
Amazing feeling, right? Well, that happened to bowler Shreyas Gopal who took the hat-trick that made headline news in cricket fraternity major heads of modern cricket.
15. Harshal Patel (Royal Challengers Bangalore – 2021)
After impressing in the domestic circuit, Harshal Patel brought his A-game to the IPL has he bagged a hat trick in the 2021 IPL season.
What’s more, he even ended up winning the Purple cap that very season!
Conclusion:
Amit Mishra (3) and Yuvraj Singh (2) lead the line for most number of hat-tricks in the IPL history books.
Scalping a hat-trick especially in an IPL game is extremely special and it has always ended up on the winning side.
With the 2022 season already under way, many bowlers will be vying for the title of recording their name in the history book.
